Julie & Julia 2.5 starsWritten & directed by Nora Ephron. Starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. PG-13. Opens Fri. Aug. 7 in area theaters. With just one word — “Butter!” — she’s got you.Meryl Streep slathers so much salacious joie de vivre onto that one line early in Julie & Julia that we know we’re in for a glorious ride.If only.Because, unfortunately, this movie is not just about Julia Child, godmother of French cooking in America, TV legend (via PBS and Dan Aykroyd) and all-around great dame.

This vegetable may remind you of a cucumber but it is actually a member of the squash family. Zucchini can be found green in color like a cucumber but there are also yellow varieties as well. Zucchini can be stir fried, steamed, baked or even eaten raw and are a great compliment to other vegetables as well. Pick your zucchini wisely. A good zucchini is heavy. It may not always be long like a cucumber and it should be heavier than a cucumber. Depending on the farmer, you may find some that are smaller.

This is not a traditional bibimbop, but I think of bibimbop as one of those “everything but the kitchen sink” recipes. I make it when I’ve got a bunch of random vegetables I want to use up and I want it all to amount to a one-bowl meal. Most commonly, bibimbop has bulgolgi, a Korean marinated beef. I didn’t have any beef so this one uses shrimp. I didn’t have any bean sprouts, but that’s ok. Traditionally, it’s an egg with runny yolk but Lon doesn’t like those so I chose to make a thin omelet and slice it up.

by Abby Cardin Stir frying, steaming, roasting, and simmering techniques mean that woks are valuable kitchen utensils that you can surely make room for in your kitchen. The Chinese and other Asian cuisines have perfected all the valuable techniques that the wok can accomplish. Woks are cooking vessels with a rounded bottom and sloping sides that aids the cooking process. The origination of the wok came out of necessity. The shortage of fuel for longer cooking processes was a problem.

We’ve been enjoying these warm, sunny days between garden tending and new furniture installing – I’ve become a happy owner of a spacious working table! We’re making a few changes in the living room which will give it a much fresher look, hopefully gaining some space, too. Have you ever tried cucumber water? It’s a nice alternative to plain water and the cucumber aroma is sooo refreshing! However, what I wanted to tell you today has to do with our extensive crop of cucumbers – which still continue to grow like crazy , and definitely faster than we can eat them.

Review of Village Wok at 1201 University Ave, Riverside, CA 92507-7241 by coolsreek : I was dissapointed with the quality of food being served at this restaurant. Maybe it was because I was there after 9 PM and ordered something of the menu rather then their combo options but the taste of food I got was not great. I think it might be a inexpensive option for university students… Have you been to Village Wok? Write a review! or Add it to your try list!

The day started with a beautiful cool breeze as we wok up early for leaders Bible Study and then breakfast with the girls.  My cabin is awesome ; a group of 7th grade girls who Love the Lord and have been at Rolling Hills for quite sometime.  They have such close friendships and great stories to share and know each other well.  They all have a servant’s heart and quickly adopted a 6th grade girls group that they met up with at the rest area for a game of red rover.  Today we did makeovers with

Evening dinner review Since we first heard about Sapa several months ago , we have been waiting and watching with excitement. Sapa is the latest venture from the proprietors of West Valley’s Pho Green Papaya, a long-standing favorite of ours. The limited information we could put together on Sapa was that it would be much closer to home and would be built around imported, centuries-old, Vietnamese “stilt houses”. We figured the food would be South East Asian in some capacity, but other than that, we didn’t really have a clue.

Since seeing SusanV’s Korean-Style Cucumber Salad on Fat Free Vegan the other day, I’ve been thinking about it. Although I probably could, like SusanV, eat it as a meal, I accompanied it with a quick hot meal that used up some veggies I need to get rid of. Korean Cucumber Salad adapted from Fat Free Vegan 2 cucumbers, thinly sliced 1/2 white onion, thinly sliced juice of 1/2 lemon 1/2 tsp salt 3 Tbsp Korean red chili flakes (these are pretty mild; if you can’t find them, use much less cayenne), or to taste 1 Tbsp sesame seeds 1 tsp sesame oil Thinly slice the cucumber, using a mandolin, food processor, or your trusty chef’s knife: Do the same with the onion.

This dish originated near the border of Qinghai and Gansu, in the land known as Amdo where the 14th Dalai Lama was discovered at the age of two. He was born Lhamo Dhondup on the 6th of July 1935 in the village of Taktser 18 months after the previous Dalai Lama’s death. His parents were subsistence farmers, farming with dzomo and yak and his mother gave birth to him in a cow shed on a straw mat.   It’s a windy region where many young people today prefer fast motor cycles to horses in the towns even though a motor cycle is of little use in the winter snow.

I found a package of “ sliced rice cakes ” at Uwajimaya and I discovered, after much Googlin’, that my hunch was confirmed – rice + salt + water in solid form is great, nay, PERFECT to stir frying. I also picked up a package of Chinese chives (or garlic chives ) and a small slab of skirt steak for contrast and went to weeeerrrrrkk! This technique mirrors the last stir-fry I did, so if you’re really interested in the details, read this post first .

First course at Teppanyaki (for two people) Teppanyaki finally! After glowing about Chef Akira Urata’s canapés at both launches of March Into Merivale and the subsequent Merivale Winter Feasts festivals, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to give his restaurant Teppanyaki a try! Granted I would’ve tried sooner had The Captain not made me promise that I’ll only go with him as he has become quite an Akira fan himself.

Kara and I just returned from a seven-day trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed at Royal Decameron Costa Flamingos all-inclusive resort which had fantastic scenery and was reasonably priced at $1700 for the week including all meals, unlimited drinks, taxis to and from the airport, and airfare. The best part of most vacations is being able to relax and we sure did. Most days went like so: wake up at 10:00; eat breakfast; get in the ocean until 12:00; swim until 1:00; eat lunch; swim some more; get ready for dinner and eat it; take pictures and enjoy one of five bars.
